denver botanic garden design build

junior year, 2019

group design build

Located in Denver, Colorado, the Denver Botanic Garden is an extraordinary, lush museum of flora that welcomes all ages as they flock to the entry doors. My class and I were designated the u-bed site in the Children's Garden to design and build an outdoor children's educational pavilion. The site was desolate and sad; we were told that the site was where imagination stops. With that information, the goal of the final design was to alter that perception of the area into a place sought after for not only children, but adults too to play, relax, and partake in classes already set in place in the gardens.

We worked with the education staff as well as the CEO of the gardens and horticulturalists, looking for their feedback after each presentation for direction on the next step in the production of the site. I, in particular, was in charge of putting together and organizing every presentation and book layout throughout the process as well as helping to develop and build pieces of the design such as the kitchen area, and modular planters.

Our final design features hexagonal pieces throughout to go along with many other attributes already existing in the gardens. We designed and built stools, tables, green walls, cubbies for play, a kitchen counter surface area, planters, lighting systems, decoration, and numerous storage areas throughout.

The furniture built for the site is all designed to be highly modular; a clear request from the client. With that, the stools are all designed to be easily stackable, the planters include casters on one end for ease of movement, and the kitchen island also has casters for more ease of movement. Furthermore, the peg wall where our green wall is located can be moved and reorganized in any way the client sees fit and the "bambi" tables are aptly named due to their ability to change height from an average children's height to an average adult height when the legs are folded in. Every length, height, and arrangement are hexagonal in one form or another for design cohesion.
