the barcelona pavilion

barcelona, spain

individual precedent research project

Designed by Mies Van Der Rohe in 1929, the Barcelona Pavilion was intended as a work of art within Spain for the Barcelona International Exhibition. The piece was constructed as the German national pavilion and opened for Europe to see that Germany, following the devastation of World War One, has grown not only in physical stature, but in economic power as well. It was a proud piece of art that holds two more famous pieces designed by Mies Van Der Rohe: the Barcelona Chair and a sculpture depicting a naked woman entitled “Dawn”. The Barcelona Pavilion was demolished in 1930 following the events of the Barcelona International Exhibition, but was then rebuilt, commissioned by the Barcelona City Council, from 1983 until 1986.
